Is Your Pest Control Making You Sick? What You Need to Know About Natural Alternatives

But there’s one source that often gets overlooked entirely: the pest control company coming to your home every quarter.
Our associate clinician Zoe recently sat down with Shelby, co-owner of Pure Pest Defense here in the Treasure Valley, to talk about why conventional pest control is a serious health concern — and what a safer, truly natural alternative looks like.
How a Pest Problem Became a Health Wake-Up Call
Shelby and her husband didn’t start out in the natural space. Like most families, they hired a conventional pest control company to spray their home for ants and bees. That’s when things started to shift in their household.
“All of a sudden our girls were starting to experience more problems,” Shelby shared. “Hormones disrupting, not being able to use the bathroom as much — just a whole bunch of different things going on within our health.”
When they started digging into the cause, the quarterly pesticide treatments were the missing piece. “I am literally putting synthetic pesticides in my home — in and around everywhere, the vents and all the things — and I’m breathing this in and I’m touching it with my skin, and I’m also putting it in my yard because they say that’s helpful. And I’m allowing my kids to go roll around in the grass… and then I’m wondering why I’m sick.”
That realization is exactly what the research supports.
What the Science Says: The Hidden Dangers of Synthetic Pesticides
The risks of synthetic pesticide exposure are not theoretical. They are documented extensively in peer-reviewed literature.
Parkinson’s Disease Multiple studies on PubMed have linked pesticide exposure — including glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup — to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. A Washington State study found glyphosate associated with premature mortality from Parkinson’s, and epidemiological investigations consistently show that chronic pesticide exposure is a significant risk factor for its development (PMID: 37949088, 35604441).
Childhood Leukemia from Prenatal Exposure The research on children is especially alarming. A California statewide case-control study found that residential proximity to agricultural pesticide applications during pregnancy increased the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed that pesticide exposure — primarily during pregnancy — increases the risk of childhood leukemia, particularly in infants. Maternal exposure to insecticides carried an odds ratio of 2.72, and herbicide exposure an odds ratio of 3.62 (PMID: 32087503, 34380208, 37015736).
Endocrine Disruption, Cancer, and Neurological Damage Endocrine-disrupting pesticides are linked to hormonal cancers, reproductive dysfunction, and developmental harm in children. Research published on PMC and PubMed confirms that these chemicals interfere with neurotransmitter function, enzyme activity, and hormone regulation — and are associated with neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD (PMID: 11605324, 30411285, PMC: 3220783).
As Shelby put it: “We’re having this low dose of pesticide sprayed all around your home, all in your grass, all around your vents — and it’s done every couple of months. You add that up over time, and your body’s not able to process all of that — on top of everything else it’s doing with the food that we have, the chemicals from cleaning supplies… our bodies are overloaded.”
Synthetic pesticides are also sprayed on our food and soils! Roundup sales reps tell farmers to not drink the roundup. Yet, it’s sprayed on food that is ‘non-organic’.
What Pure Pest Defense Does Differently
After stopping conventional treatments and seeing their family’s health begin to recover, Shelby and her husband set out to create a pest control solution they could feel good about.
